Choose the ideal vinyl electrical tape with 3M’s Selection Guide

By Michelle Froese | January 19, 2021

With a strong, flexible PVC backing and excellent insulating properties, 3M vinyl electrical tapes withstand moisture, abrasion, corrosion, alkalis, and acids. A good vinyl electrical tape is versatile. Its main job is to insulate but, ideally, it should also form a tight seal that resists corrosive contaminants. It should also perform without incidents in hot or cold weather.

This is no problem for 3M. The company’s electrical tapes are flame-retardant, UL listed, and CSA certified in a wide range of operating temperatures.

To ensure you choose the right vinyl electrical tape for the job, 3M offers a selection guide, which includes the following topics…

How to choose: In vinyl tape selection, there are six key factors to consider: dielectric strength, elasticity, elongation, temperature rating, adhesion, and thickness.

Performance comparisons: There are a wide array of tape choices. 3M’s easy-to -read chart will give you performance ratings in a glance.

The case for a jacket: While PVC-backed vinyl tapes are the primary insulator in low voltage situations, they’re also highly regarded to replace and reinforce cable jackets in low, medium, and high-voltage applications. Fortunately, there are many ways vinyl tape helps to protect applications.
