When it comes to adhesives, there’s a lot that goes into formulating a safe and effective product. To learn more about the science, watch a video here.
As the number of people with chronic diseases and the size of the aging population continues to grow, medical device design engineers need adhesive solutions that are gentle and secure to help support device compliance by end-users.
To this end, 3M has announced its latest addition to a new class of silicone adhesives that balances strength, flexibility, and comfort — the 2484 3M Single-coated Medical-film Tape with a Hi-tack Silicone Adhesive on Liner.
This 2484 Silicone Adhesive is breathable, conformable, enabling up to a seven-day wear time that minimizes skin cell removal. This means it’s an ideal application on fragile skin.
“In medical device design, patient safety is of the utmost importance, which is why we continue to focus on silicone adhesives and our Hi-tack Silicone Adhesive Portfolio,” said Chad Reed, global business director of 3M Medical Device Solutions. “Designing devices for people with more fragile skin, such as those with chronic diseases or on the opposite ends of the age spectrum, can be challenging; yet they can be the populations most in need of reliable wearable devices.”
The 2484 Adhesive is ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization compatible and compliant with ISO 10993 parts 5 & 10. It is the second product to join the 3M Hi-Tack Silicone Adhesive Portfolio, with 2480 3M Hi-tack Silicone Adhesive, in a matter of months.
“The 2484 3M Hi-Tack Silicone Adhesive is gentle even on delicate skin, providing design engineers an adhesive that meets the needs of both the latest in medical device design and the people who wear them,” added Reed. “By using 3M’s 55+ years of skin adhesive experience, we help design engineers create dependable, feature-rich devices. The 2484 3M Hi-Tack Silicone Adhesive is the latest advancement in that effort.”
